BREAKING: Senate In Closed Session With Security Chiefs

(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The Senate is currently holding a closed door session with the Chief of Defence Staff, the service chiefs, the inspector General of Police and heads of intelligence agencies in the country Those in attendance are General Lucky Eluoye Onyenucheya Irabor (Chief of Defence Staff), Lt. General Ibrahim Attahiru ( Chief of Army Staff); Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Chief of Naval Staff); and Vice Marshal Isiaka O. Amao (Chief of Air Staff). Also in the meeting are the Acting Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, the National Security Adviser, Babagana Munguno, Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Salihi Magashi (Rtd), the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar

Insecurity: Senate grills security chiefs, request supplementary budget for military hardware

The Chief of Defence Staff, who spoke on behalf of the armed forces, briefed the Red Chamber on the general security challenges and requirements to have an efficient and effective security. The military authorities and some lawmakers had complained about inadequate necessary weapons to tackle the rising insecurity in different parts of the country. Same challenge, it was gathered, was re-echoed during the closed session by the security chiefs, who assured that the country would see improved security situation once the necessary resources are provided. The lawmakers, after the briefing, said though they did not discuss money during the closed session, they were awaiting supplementary budget from the Executive that will help in providing funding for the security agencies.

Punch Newspapers Sections Published 12:45 am Last Tuesday, April 6, 2021, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), appointed Usman Alkali Baba from Yobe State as the new acting Inspector-General of Police. He is the 21st indigenous police officer to be so appointed. He took over from Mohammed Adamu.  Baba, who has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, served as acting Deputy Inspector-General of Police in-charge of the Department of Finance and Administration. He was also Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone-5 Benin; Zone 4 Makurdi and Zone 7 Abuja. He was also a former Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory and Delta Commands amongst other appointments. Until his recent appointment as the acting IGP, he was the Force Secretary.
