A fire on Sunday afternoon tore through a home on Peterson Street, leaving it heavily damaged and unoccupied as of Monday, according to the Ketchikan Fire Department s acting fire chief.
All people living in the building escaped unharmed, but a dog and a cat are believed to have perished in the fire.
Multiple people called to report the fire on Sunday afternoon, said Acting Fire Chief Scott Brainard, including Sonya Skan, the only resident who was home when the fire broke out.
In a Monday evening phone interview with the Daily News, Skan, a former Ketchikan School Board member, said she lived at the home with her husband, Norman Skan and two grandkids. She had just awoken from a nap on Sunday when she noticed smoke.

Burst Pipes from Recent Cold Weather Causes UAS Ketchikan Damage
Sunday PM (SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - During the recent cold weather, a sprinkler pipe froze and burst in the Zeigler Building at 2600 7th Avenue on the UAS Ketchikan Campus, resulting in a large amount of water travelling through corrugated roofing panels to various locations on the first and second floor of the building.
Water making its way through the corrugated roofing panels and draining to spaces below flooded areas of the UAS Ketchikan Library, the Student Center and a number of offices and hallways. Approximately 5,000 UAS Ketchikan Library books, a number of computers and monitors, important documents, office furniture, carpet flooring and ceiling tile were subject to various levels of water damage.

Saturday PM (SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - Fire Marshal Gretchen O Sullivan released information on the Ketchikan residential structure fire at 3437 Denali Street reporting that investigators from the Fire Investigation Task Force determined the fire to be cooking related, no foul play is suspected.
The Ketchikan Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke seen in a house last Tuesday morning , December 30th, at 4:49 AM. Dispatch was advised of the possibility of a victim trapped upstairs in the home. Firefighters made entry; however, attempts made of a rescue on the third floor were hampered by heavy smoke, heat and flames, according to O Sullivan. A third building occupant exited the building and remains with family.
