Cork father’s grief for his son brings new life to old songs

A CORK man is reimagining songs about love and loss to bring comfort to people who are grieving.
Devoted father Michael Fitzgerald was with his son, Aodhrua, when Aodhrua succumbed to cancer at just 21 years of age, during Christmas 2013.
The years that followed were intensely painful for Michael.
Nonetheless, he was determined to channel that pain in a way that helped others.
The result was SomeRiseSomeFall, an independent community of songwriters, musicians and creatives that brings music to the world in a new way. The initiative has brought together artists and vocalists such as John Blek, Rowan, Anna Mitchell, Kevin Herron and Marlene Enright, as well as producer Brian Casey, videographer Allie Glynn and artist Ríona Ní Riagáin. ....

This time last year we were looking forward to so many gigs, concerts, shows, performances and events that we could hardly arrange a suitable schedule to attend even half of them. But then, from March, the ground under the Irish music industry went from concrete to clay, and the remainder of the year swayed between hopeful and hopeless to resignation and defiance.
Usually at this point in the year, music venues across the country would be putting up the ‘sold out’ signs for their respective New Year’s Eve gigs, but instead it’s a slew of live-streamed shows from selected venues. The majority of the streamed shows have been made possible due to the funding provided by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media from the Live Performance Suppo ....
