Local lines company gives leg-up to young people seeking work

“Supporting youth to make their own way in life is a wonderful way to give back to the Marlborough community.”
Cosgrove said he was delighted at a recent graduation ceremony, when a young man came up to him and asked about the six-month work placement, saying “can I do that?”
The first participant, 21-year-old Hoani Taylor-Love, is nearing completion of his six-month term with the company, and is grateful for the opportunity given to him.
Taylor-Love admits he was “lazy” before his case manager sent him on the employability programme, but he has enjoyed working.
“It’s good. I want to get a trade now,” he said. ....

Inappropriate sexual behaviour crosses all age groups, races and ethnicities, whether it s abuse of male to female, female to male, or same sex abuse, says a local youth worker.
“It happens in our community, and we don t necessarily hear about these stories, because it s uncomfortable, and it s hard to be brave and to ask for help or support,” Marlborough Youth Trust Manager Jo Lane said. ....

Blenheim s youth have until Monday to register for the Expression Sessions being held at the Marlborough Youth Trust over the next six weeks in the lead up to NZ Youth Week in May.
We are stronger together is the theme for this year s youth week, which will be celebrated across the country from May 8-16.
Expression sessions give young people an opportunity to express Youth Week in a form of art they can relate to, whether photography, dance or painting. ....

Molnar said the only effect had been the additional stress on funding of the systems that support the well-being of the youth.
Rory Crawford from Sport Tasman, one of the facilitators of the event agreed: “It’s quite clear that the areas they’ve spoken about have not come about as a result of Covid – they have been ingrained,” he said.
“The hui was about truly understanding what the main challenges and areas are that they want to see support and help with, and for the youth to direct us as organisations to action some of those points.”

Later that day, Pfizer confirmed it was on track to deliver the first doses of the vaccine to New Zealand before the end of March.
First up for the vaccine would be workers at the border and at managed isolation facilities, including cleaners and maintenance staff, and their families. Next down the line was likely to be those in aged-care facilities.
Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield on Thursday addressed concerns some vaccines could be less effective on older people by saying the Government could target different age groups in order to protect the wider population.
Bloomfield said he still believed the vaccine to be effective in over 65s. ....
