Relay for Life highlights cancer awareness

SCOTT HAMMOND/STUFF
Donna Holder, Carrie Wilson, and Rhonda Henderson are members of the Julie’s People Relay for Life team. They will be participating in memory of Donna’s sister Julie MacDonell.
A relay event which will see participants walking and running for 12 hours throughout the night, will carry the message that cancer doesn t stop, and neither should we.
The Marlborough Relay for Life event is to be held at the A&P Park in March, and is the main fundraiser of the Cancer Society for the support of their work.
“We’re encouraging teams to register now to join us for this inspiring event, that provides a forum to celebrate cancer survivors and their carers, remember loved one s lost to cancer, and helps fight back by fundraising to provide our local cancer information and support services,” said Marlborough Cancer Society manager Felicity Spencer. ....

Fatal helicopter flight due to pilot flying too low

Simcox crashed his helicopter into power lines near D Urville Island on March 13, 2015.
The crash happened at about 5.30pm when the helicopter hit a power line which spanned the French Pass.
The impact caused one or both of the main rotor blades to come in contact with the cockpit, before the helicopter descended sharply into the sea, the report said.
The Police National Dive Squad recovered Simcox s body from the wreckage two days later.
An Aircraft Accident report prepared by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) found that Simcox had been flying below the minimum 500 feet height required for Visual Flight Rules (VFR) flights before colliding with the power lines. ....

New Year Honours: Ken Forrest, the man who changed the electricity game

Forrest retired in December 2019, after 42 years of working for the same company.
“If we provide a reliable supply there are no complaints – we’re typically only seen in times of storms when things go wrong, but a lot goes on behind the scenes to achieve success,” Forrest explained.
In the early 1990s, after the government announced significant reforms to the electricity industry, Forrest led a group of industry entities in seeking community-owned assets. The group successfully received recognition of an ownership structure in the form of a trust that directly benefited local consumers.
Forrest said it had been an “absolute pleasure” to serve the electricity consumers, and it was particularly satisfying during times of reforms to work towards trust ownership, where “the benefits go back to the consumers”. ....

State Zero « The Standard

And:
E/G is the energy intensity of the GDP
F/E is the carbon footprint of energy
If we want to get F, total carbon to zero, we have to get one of these four factors to zero.
Assuming that at some stage this century we must drive F (total carbon rate) to zero, this implies at least one of these factors must also be zero. But which ones?
Setting P = 0 is the human extinction plan and I think we can rule that one out. Nonetheless humanity is now entering an entirely new demographic state we have never been in before; many developed nations are now at zero or even negative population growth. This has long term implications well worth exploring in a future post. ....
