A growing number of states are slowing the pace of their reports on key pandemic data, including cases, deaths and hospitalizations, concerning some epidemiologists and researchers, who say such moves may be too soon given how crucial data is for spotting outbreaks.
They worry lagging data will leave public-health leaders with blind spots as new variants of the coronavirus circulate and many parts of the world battle rising cases.
Early in the pandemic, states created online data dashboards and posted regular public updates or held public briefings with elected officials to disclose daily updates on new Covid-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths. Over time, as the severity of the pandemic in the U.S. has lessened, vaccine rates improved and nearly all key metrics dropped, states began updating their data less frequently. ....

By nearly every measure, December was the worst month on record since the pandemic took hold in the U.S.
Thanksgiving gatherings, cooler weather and general fatigue from nine months of restrictions contributed to an onslaught of new confirmed coronavirus cases across much of the country, bringing with it the subsequent surge in hospitalizations and deaths that public-health officials had warned of.

Of the country’s 19.89 million infections reported since the start of the pandemic, over 6.1 million new cases were recorded in December far more than in any other month. ....

After weeks of surging coronavirus cases, states in the Midwest are seeing the curve begin to flatten, even as other parts of the U.S. experience a fresh rise and health experts warn the impact of Thanksgiving hasn’t been fully felt.
The seven-day average of new cases in Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and the Dakotas has declined this week compared with a week earlier, according to data from the Covid Tracking Project. The seven-day average smooths out irregularities in data reporting, providing a clearer picture of trends. ....
