Direction. is that also your assumption? so what we re basically looking at now is effectively two different types of search. the one that is going on under the surface, as you ve discussed with respect to the detection of the black boxes and also trying to locate a debris field as well. as part of the search operations that have been going on for the last few weeks, a number of aircraft have been dropping marker beacons. now, anything that is sitting at the bottom of the ocean will be subject to a different patent than that sitting on the top. so the search areas for today are based off a possible debris field that would be a couple of hundred miles across to the west and that s just looking at where the ocean currents have been by a computer model and from the marker buoys. are you still also working under the assumption that the battery life for the two black boxes, that the batteries are still working or do you fear they may have dried up? ....
For example, if you re looking for white objects in the water with white caps everywhere, it s very, very difficult. and i ve been in circumstances myself where there were people, survivors of a ship going down or a boat going down, where i would not have been able to find the people in the water because it was just white caps everywhere, without the assistance of marker buoys with smoke that had been dropped in the water. it was actually the marker buoys that i was able to use to get the reference on the people who were in the water, because i couldn t pick them up. there was so much to excite the eye. these are the conditions, some of the conditions that our people have been doing the search have sometimes had to deal with. ....
May spot. there is. there s a responsibility and sensitivity should you find any kind of debris that looks as though it would be in this case from wreckage. whether it be a seat cushion, personal effects that you would recognize this is probably belonging to a wreck or a ship wreck or something. it s happened before. it s not like this is pie in the sky. by the way, do you foresee at some point the bigger part of this effort to find this mystery missing flight moving to the land? actually combing the shores of this extraordinarily remote western part of the country? at this point it s all possible just because we still do not know. how do you beachcomb? what kind of a search what would it look like? well, i think you would first of all have, again, aerials. you would have helicopters that can fly just above and hover and see are we finding a debris field. they may be following it. i m not sure what they re doing as far as marker buoys if they have a debris field they re goi ....
The cockpit and crash the plane. jon: how confident are you that eventually they ll be able to find this plane and the black boxes? i am confident that they will. how they map the bottom of the ocean with the air france crash, they re going to that s going to be a very similar parallel. now, it will be a larger area because of the debris field has been floating for so long. but the navy has put marker buoys in the water to see where the drifts are and i am it s going to take awhile but i am confident they will solve this mystery. jon: they had a pretty good idea where air france went down and it still took a few years. we have to leave it there. thank you both. jenna: as we ve been reporting, our best hope of finding the malaysian airliner black box seem to be the u.s. navy s locator and we did some research on this very interesting tool that most of us are learning about. it was most recently deployed after the crash of the air france jet in the atlantic ocean ....
