WASHINGTON (CNS) Maryland’s Catholic bishops are encouraging Catholics strongly to be vaccinated against COVID-19, “unless medically indicated otherwise.”
“A Catholic can in good conscience receive these COVID-19 vaccines,” they said in a joint letter, which echoed what most bishops around the country, the Vatican and leaders of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have said about use of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines now being distributed. ....

Cardinal Gregory calls suit 'last resort' to protect religious rights

WASHINGTON – In a Dec. 22 op-ed column in The Washington Post, Cardinal Wilton D. Gregory of Washington said the archdiocese s recent lawsuit against District of Columbia s COVID-19 restrictions on houses of worship was a last resort to protect the free exercise of religion in the nation s capital.
In an executive order issued Dec. 16, in response to a lawsuit filed five days earlier by the Archdiocese of Washington, Mayor Muriel Bowser modified her earlier limits to 25% of capacity and no more than 250 people. The earlier cap was 50 people.
We appreciate that our local officials have had to make difficult decisions in the face of unprecedented challenges, Cardinal Gregory wrote. But praying apart is not the same as praying together. ....

DC mayor adjusts COVID-19 limits on churches after archdiocese files lawsuit

WASHINGTON District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser, in response to a lawsuit filed by the Archdiocese of Washington, has modified the current pandemic limits on gatherings at houses of worship in the District to 25% of capacity and no more than 250 people.
Bowser took the action in an executive order issued Dec. 16. It became effective at 12:01 a.m. Dec. 17 and will be in place through Dec. 31.
In order to resolve litigation, it said, this order repeals the numeric cap of 50 persons on gatherings at houses of worship and allows physically large facilities to accommodate more worshippers based on their overall capacity, up to a maximum of 250 persons. ....
