We have just watched the film “Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles” on CraveTV. In case you don’t know him, Yotam Ottolenghi is an Israeli-born chef who has published some wonderful cookbooks with his business partner Sami Tamimi. We have three - Ottolenghi, Simple and Flavour. They are good and introduce many new flavours of the Meditrerranean Sea, as it borders north Africa and the Middle East, that we had never really tried before. You understand, of course, that the use of “we” in this case is the “royal ‘we’” as your humble scribe has never really learned to cook (having no particular interest beyond eating) and relies completely on Tim for sustenance. ....
This is the last column of the year from the arts community in the Flin Flon area. Usually, it would be a celebration of all the amazing stuff our arts and culture groups have accomplished over the past year. This year was a little different. We couldn’t have a Community Choir show like Le Grand Opera or Nineteen Eighty-Four or The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. We couldn’t have the Borealis Chamber Choir performing the Flin Flon version of Lessons and Carols. We couldn’t even have Home Routes shows or Johnny’s Social Club events. But all was not lost. ....
“We had a lot of help from a lot of different people.” Musicians including Jacob Harvie, Mark Kolt, Kim Jones, Lane Laderoute and others will each chip in some Christmas tunes, along with a Christmas carol sing-along. The performance will also include some notable readings - including one from Manitoba Lieutenant Governor Janice Filmon. Initially, the plan for this year’s choir Christmas show was to hold it at the R.H. Channing Auditorium to an empty room, streaming the show online from there. When new COVID-19 restrictions and gathering limits disallowed that from happening, organizers took the show fully remote. ....
