Long relegated to the packaging end of the food line, robots are now in the food processing business.
We all saw the images of meat-packing plants during the height of the pandemic. The Covid-19 virus was running rampant through the workers who were operating in dense groups. And we all thought, can’t robots do this?
Those who were managing the meatpacking factories were thinking the same thing. Their plants were shutting down because the virus was spreading and little could be done to effectively meet social distancing mandates. “Those companies came to us and asked, how can we do this with robots and make it economically viable?” said Mark Joppru, VP of robotics and automation at ABB. ....

As the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic rages on in North America and millions of people remain in lockdown, manufacturers and other industries are turning to robots to keep their factories running.
According to a report by the Association for Advancing Automation, a trade organization that advocates for the supposed benefits of automating jobs, North American companies ordered 9,972 robot units in the fourth quarter of 2020. This represents a nearly 64 percent increase over the fourth quarter of 2019, the second-best quarter ever for North American robotics sales. The total number of robot units sold in 2020 was 31,044, which is up 3.5 percent from 2019. ....

ANN ARBOR, Mich.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#A3–For the first time, yearly orders of robots from non-automotive sectors surpassed automotive robot orders, as sales of robotic units in North America increased 3.5% in 2020 from 2019. This growth was driven by a strong Q4 that was the second-best quarter ever for North American robotic sales with a 63.6% increase over Q4 2019.
Industry statistics – released today by the Robotic Industries Association (RIA), part of the Association for Advancing Automation (A3) – show that North American companies ordered 31,044 robotic units, valued at $1.572 billion in 2020. In Q4, companies ordered 9,972 units valued at $479 million. ....
