Policy support needed to drive maritime innovation

Policy support needed to drive maritime innovation Government support for innovative low-carbon propulsion technology is needed to help unlock the shipping industry’s desire to decarbonise, according to a panel of experts. Speaking at ShipTech Virtual Is the Zero-Carbon Future a Slow Shipping Future? as part of the Maritime Online Series, Diane Gilpin, CEO & Founder of Smart Green Shipping said action was needed to prevent innovations from being lost. Gilping recalled that early, small, land-based wind turbines received domestic UK government support in the form of renewable obligation certificates which supported the sector through a period where it would otherwise have made little commercial sense for financial investors to come on board. “That enabled was for the pioneering developers to overcome what is known as the valley of death, where innovations go to die,” said Gilpin.

Shipping has an opportunity to leapfrog a technology generation

Shipping has an opportunity to leapfrog a technology generation The shipping industry has an opportunity to leapfrog an entire generation of industrial technology to make the most of digital efficiency improvements, according to a panel of experts. Speaking at Seatrade ShipTech Virtual – Making Data Work for Shipping, panellists shared their views on digitalisation from their varied perspectives. “I think that the maritime industry is poised right now, to leapfrog an entire generation of the technology -the big data generation that was very expensive and very laborious to make sense of,” said Jesse Brink, CEO of ioCurrents, a company using AI and machine learning in its fuel efficiency, maintenance and voyage optimisation products.

EEXI just a ticket to the game | Seatrade Maritime

EEXI just ‘a ticket to the game’ The Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) is just a ticket to the game in improving efficiency, with the real challenge ahead in operational carbon intensity indicator (CII). Those were the thoughts of a panel of experts at the Global Maritime Club Virtual Forum - Spotlight on EEXI Regulatory Compliance hosted by The Maritime Online Series on July 1. EEXI and CII are both global regulations aimed at reducing shipping’s carbon intensity. EEXI is a one-off look at the technical or design efficiency of a vessel, while CII will require demonstrable reductions in operational carbon intensity for vessels over 5,000gt from 2023 to 2030.
