installed on Congress Ave. The Austin Transportation Department has completed the installation of mobility and safety improvements on 1.3 miles of Congress Avenue between Riverside Drive and 11th Street. Among the changes, new protected bicycle lanes create physical separation between motor vehicles and bicycles or scooters. New left turn lanes at Cesar Chavez Street, Fifth Street and Sixth Street, and new dedicated right turn lanes at northbound Cesar Chavez, Barton Springs Road and northbound Riverside Drive improve overall traffic flow on Congress Avenue and reduce conflicts with pedestrian, bicycle and scooter traffic. Multiple intersections also include protected intersection designs that improve yielding and visibility. ....
Austin Community Foundation has awarded $225,000 from its Hispanic Impact Fund to 12 local nonprofit organizations. The funds are unrestricted and can be used for general operating expenses for these organizations that have focused on the Hispanic and Latino communities. The fund focused on organizations in three areas: early childhood education, health and wellness, and job skills and entrepreneurship. The Hispanic Impact Fund was established in 2017 and has granted $655,000 since then. “Supporting Central Texas nonprofits that serve Latino families and individuals is vital to ensuring that the racial wealth divide doesn’t expand further due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Monica Muñoz Andry, 2020 grants chair for the Hispanic Impact Fund. ....
donations for program Austin Energy is seeking donations from customers for its Utilities’ Customer Assistance Program, which helps customers who are unable to pay their utility bills due to unexpected emergencies. This year, additional utility relief funding, approved by the Austin City Council in April, was available to individuals affected by COVID-19. In fiscal year 2020, the program distributed $7.4 million in utility bill assistance to more than 14,000 households. Austin Utilities customers can make a one-time or recurring donation by adding it to their paper or online utility bill or by mail. AUSTIN Bergstrom Spur Corridor The Austin Public Works Urban Trail Program and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization have released a study on the Bergstrom Spur Corridor, an abandoned railroad that once served the former Bergstrom Airforce Base. ....
Austin Community Foundation opens Women s Fund grant applications Austin Community Foundation has opened grant applications for its Women s Fund. The fund is expected to award 20 grants that will total $400,000 to local nonprofit organizations that serve women in areas such as providing affordable housing, increasing access to child care, supporting education, reducing health disparities in women of color or preventing unintended pregnancy. The application for the grants is online at Austin Community Foundation s website and due by Jan. 28. Austin Community Foundation s Women s Fund began in 2004 and has donated funds to more than 60 nonprofits. This year grants went to organizations like SAFE Alliance, Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, Foundation Communities, Todos Juntos Learning Center and Mariposa Family Learning Center. ....
