DAME Fanny Waterman, founder and President Emeritus of The Leeds International Piano Competition, died peacefully yesterday at her residential care home in Ilkley, Yorkshire at the age of 100.
Born in Leeds (22 March, 1920), Dame Fanny Waterman founded the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1961 with her late husband Dr Geoffrey de Keyser and Marion Thorpe CBE, then the Countess of Harewood. The first event followed in 1963 and she remained its Chairman & Artistic Director until her retirement in 2015 at the age of 95. As President Emeritus she attended live concerts and events until the beginning of 2020, although ambitious plans to celebrate her 100th Birthday in March 2020 had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. ....

The founder of The Leeds Piano Competition and admired piano teacher, Dame Fanny Waterman, has died at the age of 100.
Born in Leeds, Waterman studied with Tobias Matthay, and later at the Royal College of Music, London, with Cyril Smith. After an impressive career as a soloist, including a performance at the 1942 Proms with Sir Henry Wood (playing as one of the pianists in Bach s Triple Keyboard Concerto), she felt that her real vocation would be as a teacher. Over the years she gave masterclasses on six continents, appeared on television and radio, and compiled a series of publications entitled ....

Virtually synonymous with the Leeds International Piano Competition, which she co-founded in 1961, Dame Fanny Waterman, who has died aged 100, was a music teacher who became one of the most prominent personalities in the musical world.
“I dreamed it up one night,” she said of “the Leeds”, as it became known universally, “and I was so excited that I woke up my husband.” Unlike Waterman, who was born in Leeds, her husband, Geoffrey de Keyser, a doctor, was a Londoner and his reaction was: “It won’t work in Leeds, it has to be in a capital city.” She stuck to her guns, however, and launched the triennial competition in her own city, raising funds from individuals, banks, local businesses and the Leeds Corporation.
