10 hrs ago Days after Marion County Parks and Recreation Commissionâs sponsored performance of Shakespeareâs âTwelfth Nightâ at Palatine Park, I continue to be appreciative for the show. Performed by âThe Rustic Mechanicals-West Virginia s Shakespeare Troupe,â the groupâs stated goal of presenting the play the way Shakespeare would have done if he were alive today was achieved. One reason Shakespearean performances seem so sterile and boring today is that the humorous, often lewd depictions, as well as musical interludes, of the original performances are usually omitted from todayâs literal presentations. Of course, if the additional comedic and musical portions were included along with the entire play, it would last an entire afternoon. Audiences in Shakespeareâs time came to his shows the way some people attend a carnival or watch back-to-back football games on TV. ....
18 hrs ago Cheers to Marion County School Superintendent Donna Hage for introducing and the school board for subsequently approving what at first glance appears to be a groundbreaking plan to bring students back up to grade level in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Interventionists have been used successfully for years in school districts around the U.S. to achieve this very goal. Cheers to the Morgantown-based PlayWorks, which provides speech and physical therapy to children and physical and intellectual disabilities, for expanding its presence here in Fairmont. Previously housed with the Disability Action Center, PlayWorks has purchased former physician offices on Locust Avenue where it will have a gym and other spaces for their clients. ....

PHOTO BY DAVID KIRK An old, abandoned tennis court in the middle of Fairmont has received new life as a community garden. Just above Coal Run Hollow down a gravel road off of Oliver Street in the middle of Fairmont sits a paved lot, which was formerly a tennis court. Now itâs covered with wooden plots, filled with flowers, vegetables and other fauna, planted by the the Fairmont community and local organizations. At the start of 2021, the Marion County Parks and Recreation Commission was contacted by a group of students from Fairmont State University about a possible project management course. Their idea was to form a community garden. ....
