AT the Northern Marianas Technical Institute board of trustees meeting on Wednesday afternoon, chairman Mario Valentino called for an independent audit of NMTIâs finances. For fiscal year 2019, the institute received $750,000 from the first to third quarters: $250,000 was processed on Dec. 12, 2019; $250,000 on Feb. 15, 2020; and $250,000 on April 14, 2020. These funds were for the period of October 2019 through June 2020. NMTI did not receive funds for the fourth quarter. Valentino noted that after taking into account how much funding was available as well as the obligations that needed to be met, and the schoolâs current balance, the institute spent $750,000 in a year when there was no school due to the Covid-19 pandemic. ....
IN a joint letter to Northern Marianas Technical Institute board chairman Mario Valentino, minority bloc Sens. Paul Manglona and Edith Deleon Guerrero urged NMTI to resume operations for the sake of its students. âIt is with great disappointment we write to you regarding the current discontinuation of the [NMTI] operations. With the closure of NMTI, approximately 100 students are being affected, not accounting for the additional 120 students that are on the waiting list for the next âmoduleâ cycle,â the senators wrote. WASHINGTON (U.S. Department of Commerce) â The U.S. Department of Commerceâs Economic Development Administration is awarding a $10.3 million grant to Northern Marianas Technical Institute, Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, to support workforce education and training through the construction of a new facility to house the schoolâs trades program. This EDA grant is expected to create 410 jobs, retain 385 jobs, and generate $2 million in private investment. âEDA is pleased to support Northern Marianas Techâs construction of its new workforce career training facility,â said Dennis Alvord, acting assistant secretary of Commerce for Economic Development. âThis project will help the Northern Mariana Islands respond to the economic impact of Super Typhoon Yutu by boosting training opportunities for citizens looking to compete for high-skill, high-wage jobs.â ....
