PRETORIA - Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in Southern Africa last March 2020, trends of irregular migration toward South Africa increased, due to the various socio-economic effects of the pandemic on many households.
The International Organization for Migration, through support from various partners such as the European Union-funded Southern African Migration Management (SAMM) project, Irish Government, The United Kingdom’s Foreign, and the Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), helped 397 stranded Malawian’s migrants to return home from Zimbabwe.

More than 200,000 Zimbabweans have returned home over the past year because of economic fallout from Covid-19 in countries where they had been working, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

More than 200,000 Zimbabweans have returned home since early 2020 as the economic fallout from COVID-19 took a toll on countries where they have been working, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) announced on Tuesday.
IOM Zimbabwe chief of mission Mario Lito Malanca said the number of returnees exceeded expectations, highlighting the urgent need for long-term solutions for regions that have suffered massive socio-economic impact from the virus.
Without these measures, we will see many returnees falling deeper into crisis, resorting to negative coping mechanisms, and possibly being forced to migrate once again through irregular means, Malanca said in a statement. ....
