A Marine trainee at the service’s infantry school at Camp Pendleton, Calif., died Thursday during a nighttime live-fire exercise, a service spokesman said.
Sgt. Maj. Steven Burkett, the top noncommissioned officer at the Marine Corps’ School of Infantry-West who earned the nickname “Sergeant Major Kettlebell” for winning Male Marine Athlete of the Year at Camp Pendleton, was removed from his position last month.
