Boardman traffic light causes stir | News, Sports, Jobs

BOARDMAN A new traffic signal in the township is causing some concern.
Located at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Southern Boulevard, the lights were first tested Friday, but are blinking caution for motorists.
The light was added because a railroad needed a protective crossing, Marilyn Kenner, township road superintendent, said during a Boardman Township trustees special meeting Monday. There are no gates to warn motorists when trains utilize the intersection.
“The gates could not be there because of the way the road is configured,” she said. “The only way they could have protection for the railroad crossing was to install a signal,” Kenner said. ....

Boardman makes plans to tidy up | News, Sports, Jobs

BOARDMAN Plans to demolish seven homes in the Cranberry Run flood zone are progressing with the township selecting an engineering and construction manager.
Township trustees unanimously chose Davey Resource Group for services at a cost of $45,250 for work that will include site grading, stream restoration and landscaping. The township will be responsible for about $5,000.
“We decided to go with Davey Resource Group because they have a lot of experience with this kind of work,” road Superintendent Marilyn Kenner said Monday.
Three Federal Emergency Management Agency grants provide nearly $1.3 million to acquire, demolish and reset the seven properties to their natural states to allow for water flow, Kenner said. The township will be responsible for about $125,000, Kenner said. ....

Funds secured to expand flood plain | News, Sports, Jobs

BOARDMAN Funding for the demolition of four homes in Boardman Township now is secured.
By tearing them down, the plan is to help reduce localized flooding, said Marilyn Kenner, township road superintendent.
A little more than $800,000 in grants have been awarded for the homes at 230 and 241 S. Cadillac Drive, and 230 and 233 Wildwood Drive.
Appraisals of the houses were approved for the Federal Emergency Management Agency grants, which will cover costs for the purchases, demolitions and regrading of each propery located within the Cranberry Run water course.
Once the homes are gone, the properties will be graded and become a two-stage channel so water stays put within the area rather than flooding adjacent homes. ....
