Local Eats: Metzger’s German restaurant has survived depressions, wars and a pandemic

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – One of the Ann Arbor area’s oldest restaurants is nearing its 93rd birthday.
Now located on Zeeb Road in Scio Township, Metzger’s has been family-owned since German immigrants Wilhelm and Marie Metzger took over a German restaurant on West Liberty St. in Ann Arbor in 1928. In 1936, the restaurant moved to 203 East Washington St., where it remained for 63 years until closing in 1999.
In 2001, Wilhelm’s grandson, John Metzger, reopened the restaurant in its current space. In his words, the business has survived the Great Depression, a world war and now the pandemic.
