Since making that list, she has written the “Fun Books by Sandy” trilogy, with the publication of its final installment, “Oh Those Old One-Room Schoolhouses and the Children They Taught,” coinciding with her 82nd birthday. Black developed a fascination with old structures, such as barns, churches, the one-room schoolhouses, railroad depots and courthouses. Not merely just the physical structures themselves, but the role they played in society, the activities people did inside them, what may have happened in early America within these buildings that may have helped frame the nation as it is today. ....

Photo provided Carthage lost an icon on January 6, 2021. Patty Tribby, longtime Carthage resident, joined her beloved mother Marie and her aunts in eternal afterlife. Patty was a character, just ask anyone who knew her! She would often be found sitting on the bench outside of her store on Main Street, or sitting on the bench in front of Todd’s Great Outdoors visiting with her buddy Mindi, or taking walks, no matter the weather. If you knew Patty, you knew she hated cooking, had never met a stranger and loved to have visitors stop by the store. She didn’t mind sharing her opinion whether it agreed with yours or not, she wasn’t shy! She made weekly visits to nursing homes until covid struck to visit friends and family. She was a staple at community functions, and a connoisseur of little dogs in BBQ sauce! You can sum Patty up by saying, she was devoted to her family and friends, and above all really loved the children of Carthage. ....
Dec 11, 2020 I started my last article by saying that COVID is changing the way we think about a lot of things, including how we prepare for this gift giving season. Let’s make it a holiday to remember with new traditions like shopping local! The last article reminded shoppers of Larry’s Saw Shop and Marie’s Variety Shop. Over the past nine months we have all watched small businesses struggle to survive. Today I will be highlighting two more small businesses in Carthage that are struggling to not only survive, but prosper in these uncertain times. If you live near Carthage, you might be familiar with two of our newest businesses, The Marick Event Center/Wedding Venue located at 300 3rd Street (formerly the Fletcher Methodist Church) and Todd’s Great Outdoors located at 2 S.
