Many issues before Hartford board
I was appalled to see the Hartford Selectboard race framed as big picture vs. nitty-gritty (“Big-picture problems vs. day-to-day details: Hartford Selectboard race balances systemic racism, road work as hot topics,” Feb. 21). The Welcoming Hartford Ordinance brought the most
Valley News coverage, skewing public perception, as though that was all that happened.
Death threats made to former Hartford Selectboard member Alicia Barrow are “big picture,” as was the death of George Floyd. Potholes in Quechee are “big picture,” as is climate change and the Texas electric grid. The personal, the local, the state and the federal are political. The Selectboard, and the town, must address racism, homelessness, potholes, Fairview Terrace, swimming pool bonds, coronavirus, energy use, climate change, and many o ....

Dartmouth should drop Division I sports
Dartmouth College is a famed academic institution, one of the best. So it is odd and disturbing that much of the publicity about Dartmouth revolves around sports rather than academics.
Three recent cases in point:
■ The ruckus over dropping five Division I varsity teams, then reinstating them, including the Forum letter by Dick Bates (“Faculty, Hanlon are responsible for Dartmouth sports cut debacle,” Feb. 7) supporting such sports and criticizing faculty for “their snobbish attitude toward athletics.”
■ The recent article describing the extraordinary and certainly very expensive process by which coaches “recruit” so-called “student-athletes” (“Ivy recruiting operations shift amid pandemic,” Feb. 5), which smacks of professional, profit-seeking entities like the Patrio ....

Forum, Feb. 12: Community power is the NH way

Community power is the NH way
I believe that New Hampshire municipalities should be free to choose where they purchase their electricity. Right now, every municipality in the state is essentially limited to purchasing electricity from a public utility monopoly.
RSA 53-E, signed into law by Gov. Chris Sununu, makes it possible for New Hampshire towns to aggregate their residential, municipal and business accounts, thereby creating a new buying entity with greater purchasing power and granting them access to a wide range of energy suppliers.
The Environmental Protection Agency states that community choice is “an attractive option for communities that want more local control over their electricity sources, more green power than is offered by the default utility, and/or lower electricity prices.” ....
