Ta proza ma swój ciężar.
Powieść „Nasza część nocy” utkana została przez Marianę Enríquez z wielu elementów. Dominującym jest groza. Autorka zaprasza nas do Argentyny pełnej ech (duchów) zmarłych ludzi, mrocznej magii, krwawych rytuałów i tych, którzy poprzez ofiary komunikują się z demonami i bogami. The late Roger Ebert once wrote that “the movies are like a machine that generates empathy.” Great fiction comes off a similar production line its many parts and widgets are often designed to engender identification and empathy from the reader, to get them deep inside the head of a stranger. The short stories of Argentine author and journalist Mariana Enriquez are seeing machines lenses that throw the uglier side of the human condition into uncomfortably sharp focus. She shows us horrors (both historical and otherworldly) that the naked eye doesn’t want to see.

The Leonora Carrington renaissance continues apace! In 2017, NYRB released the Surrealist painter and author’s memoir and Dorothy published her
Complete Stories. Now, before Carrington’s son Gabriel Weisz releases his own “memoir” about his mother later this year, NYRB returns with a reprint of her 1974 novel.
The Hearing Trumpet is difficult to synopsize but involves a 92-year-old woman whose family ships her off to an elder care facility. There, Carrington’s interests in absurdism, conspiracies, and Surrealism take over in a novel that Blake Butler describes as “ ....
