In the Philippines, much has been achieved in terms of gender equality. We have elected two woman presidents, President Corazon C. Aquino and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The latter is also the first and only woman to be elected as Speaker of the House. Leni Robredo is the second woman to become Vice President of the Philippines. Two Maria Lourdes Sereno and Teresita de Castro have served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Leonen says he s currently not cut out for chief justice

LAGRIMAS, GMA News Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Marvic Leonen, one of the tribunal s most senior magistrates, on Friday said he believes he is currently not cut out for chief justice. Leonen will be automatically nominated for chief justice when Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta retires in March, one year ahead of his mandatory retirement age. No comment yet, Leonen said when asked if he will accept. I am honored to have been automatically nominated, but that is also a function of seniority. But of course in my mind I am looking at what I should do, and more likely, I am better at supporting a chief justice rather than being one. But as I said, no comment, he said at a press conference hosted by the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 14) The Judicial and Bar Council has opened the application for the next head of the Supreme Court, with around two months left before Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta s early retirement.
The JBC announced on Thursday that Peralta s retirement was approved on Jan. 5, after he signified last month his intention to bow out of the high court on his 69th birthday this March 27.
The council said it will be accepting applications for the position until Feb. 15, 2021. Individuals may apply or be recommended.
The five most senior magistrates next to Peralta are automatically nominated for the post, but they must manifest their acceptance of the nomination. These include three appointees of President Benigno Aquino III: Associate Justices Estela Perlas Bernabe, Marvic Leonen, and Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa. The other two are appointees of President Rodrigo Duterte: Associate Jus
