.- This summer, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, presents Ernesto Neto: SunForceOceanLife, a major commission and one of the largest crochet works to date by the renowned Brazilian artist. Suspended from the soaring ceiling of Cullinan Hall of the Caroline Weiss Law Building, SunForceOceanLife forms a monumental labyrinth of brightly colored pathways defined by intricately crocheted netting. Reaching a height of 12 feet in the air, the pathways spiral outwards from the center of the gallery to create an interactive, multi-sensory sculptural intervention for visitors to explore. The year was 1969. It was a time of social protest over civil rights and representation issues. Those protests echoed at UCLA, where Mexican American students were demanding improved access to higher education, as well as greater resources devoted to the study of the Mexican experience in the U.S.
Enter the university’s Mexican American Cultural Center, which was established to support research in what was then the new field of Chicano studies. In the 52 years since, that center now known as the Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC) has grown from a small student- and faculty-led initiative to a full-blown academic center, supporting original research and publications, the maintenance of archival collections and a library. ....

.-The Menil Collection announced the release of Allora & Calzadilla: Specters of Noon, a new publication focused on the Puerto Rico-based artists show currently on view in Houston.
The exhibition includes seven sculptural works by artists Allora & Calzadilla that revolve around the theme of acedia, a demon that besieges the soul at noon. Created specifically for the museums main building, the exhibition uses sounds, cast shadows, and novel sculptural materials to evoke an awe- inducing atmosphere of bewilderment and beauty as a metaphor for the contemporary moment. ....
