Nassau County commissioners voted Monday night to set up a committee and rules for conserving environmentally important land in the growing Jacksonville suburb.
The Conservation Lands Acquisition and Management (CLAM) program represents a “monumental step forward” in handling the county’s development, County Manager Taco Pope told commissioners.
The program creates a scoring system for consistently comparing different pieces of land and measuring which should be higher priorities for conservation.
It also creates a system for overseeing how the county acquires land and manages it, as well as managing conservation easements on property that remains privately owned.
Preserving portions of the county from development has become a higher priority as more people have moved in. Nassau County’s population grew about 21 percent – to about 89,000 – between 2010 and 2019, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated.
