Volunteers bring tales of the dead to life at historic Nelson cemetery

McIntyre’s tangle with Bateman is of many colourful tales he’s collected over the months he s spent restoring graves at Nelson’s historic Wakapuaka Cemetery.

The difference between the restored graves and those still waiting the team s attention is stark.
Over the last year, the retiree and his team of volunteers have restored 3000 graves, McIntyre says. Not a bad effort in a cemetery with a population of 16,000, including 4000 unmarked graves.
When McIntyre began his work two-and-a-half years ago the cemetery was overgrown, with drifts of leaves covering moss-covered graves. Many of the headstones, some dating back to the 1860s, had slumped into the ground, time and weather obscuring inscriptions. ....
