New head of diversity agency: All hands on deck in fight for Jews of color

Marcella White Campbell, the new director of S.F.-based Jewish diversity awareness organization Be’chol Lashon, was brought to tears as she described how it felt to watch the Capitol riots with her 15-year-old son.
“He’s Black and he’s Jewish,” she said. “And when the Capitol was swarmed on Jan. 6 … I hadn’t seen him cry since he was a child.
“He said, ‘They’re attacking everything about me, they’re attacking my entire identity,’” Campbell continued. “And I haven’t recovered from that as a parent hearing him say those things.”
Campbell was speaking to Jonathan Greenblatt, the national director and CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, when she told that story during a nearly hourlong webinar on Feb. 18. The two had a virtual conversation, along with Allison Padilla-Goodman, vice president of the ADL’s Southern Division, about the need to center Jews of color, and to continue the fight, as Greenblatt put it, to “shrug off the legacy ....

State Sen. Scott Wiener of San Francisco has been named chair of the California Senate Mental Health Caucus, “which focuses on improving California’s resources for mental health and substance abuse disorders,” according to a press release from his office. Wiener has also been named Legislator of the Year by the California Marriage and Family Therapists for his work on Senate Bill 855, which “has made California a nationwide leader in mental health care,” according to the press release.

JTA As the videos of George Floyd’s killing galvanized a historic wave of racial justice protests this past summer, the staff of one of the country’s leading organizations promoting Jews of color knew they had to make a big change.
For two decades, Be’chol Lashon had pioneered programming by and for Jews of color. Inspired by a Hanukkah gathering of diverse Jews in the San Francisco area in December 2000, it launched a summer camp for young Jews of color, a curriculum for children on the topic, a blog elevating the voices of multiracial Jews and a diversity training and consulting program. ....
