She said it was very generous of the Wainuomata marae to provide its facilities. It reflects the importance of getting everyone in the community vaccinated, she said. “Māori communities take their responsibility for providing protection seriously so this act of opening the marae is part of a hope that everyone, our friends and whānau, and friends we have not even met yet, will all have a greater level of protection from the COVID-19 virus.”

Harete Kawana was the first person to be vaccinated at the Wainuiomata Marae Covid-19 vaccination clinic when it opened on June 1. The clinic opened on a trial basis on Wednesday and is now aiming to vaccinate 60 people a day, with an ultimate target of 120 a day.
