On his first day of freedom, Mostafa “Moz” Azimitabar found himself face to face with a mob of kangaroos on the outskirts of Melbourne.
“I talked with the kangaroos,” he laughs. “I said ‘how are you?’.”

Freedom for refugees detained in Melbourne hotel for months after offshore detention transfer


More than 20 refugees detained in Melbourne for months after they were transferred from offshore detention will finally be released, according to detainees and refugee advocates.
At least 23 men have been told they will receive bridging visas and be released from the Park Hotel in Carlton on Wednesday.
They were transported by buses to the Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation (MITA) detention centre under heavy police presence to collect their possessions ahead of being released. 
Breaking: Twenty six refugees who were locked up in the Park prison have got their Bridging Visa right now. Congratulations! detained Kurdish refugee Mostafa Azimitabar tweeted.  ....

More than 60 refugees being held at a hotel have been granted temporary visas after spending seven years in detention.

More than 60 refugees held at the Park Hotel in Carlton have been granted temporary bridging visas, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) said.
The centre announced 26 refugees received six-month visas on Wednesday and another 34 would be released from the hotel on Thursday.
This comes after the men were brought to Australia from offshore detention on Manus Island in 2019 to seek medical care under the now-repealed medevac legislation. ....

This article inspired me to start writing. I did not want to respond to them by adding a comment, so I started writing a short fictional story based on real events called Close the Eyes of Your Conscience.” It ended up getting published by Meanjin this September. I was not fluent in English so I wrote the story in Farsi. In January 2019 I met Omid Tofighian on Manus Island and I spoke to him about my writing. He was keen to translate it. This was the beginning of my collaboration with Omid, and we have produced a lot of work together since. We have plans to do a lot more. All the writing, translations and research is done on a mobile phone. ....
