Within two minutes of stepping into woods near Connecticut’s southwestern shore last week, state scientist Goudarz Molaei was crawling with proof that this will be a bad year for ticks.
Asian long-horned ticks, a recent arrival in the state, peppered Molaei’s white coveralls and a cloth collection device called a “drag.” Back at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, Molaei and his assistant counted nearly 200 bloodsucking arachnids, mostly Asian long-horned ticks, but also two lone star ticks, another species that has extended its range into Connecticut along with the Gulf Coast tick. ....
