Cyclone Tauktae: Central Water Commission predicts severe flood in 2 states

Water levels are likely to reach danger and highest flood levels, the CWC said.
As of 8 am today morning, rivers Manimala, Achankovil in Kerala and Kodaiyar in Tamil Nadu continued flowing in Severe situation , all three above their danger levels.
On Friday night, the India Meteorological Department had informed that the low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea near Lakshwadeep had intensified into a deep depression and will intensify into a cyclonic storm in the following 12 hours.

Houses are flooded due to the incessant rains at Chellanam in Kochi.With the Tauktae cyclone expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in nine districts in Kerala on Saturday. Heavy rain has been lashing Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts from Friday evening.
The districts may receive more than 20 cm rainfall in 24 hours. Meanwhile, the sea continue to be very rough and huge tidal waves are battering the coastal hamlets displacing hundreds of families. The stormy weather is expected to continue till Sunday evening. ....

Torrential rains batter Kerala as cyclone Tauktae intensifies
Torrential rains accompanied by fierce winds and high tidal waves wreaked havoc and claimed two lives in Kerala, as it lashed the state since last night forcing the government to shift hundreds of families to relief camps, sources said on Saturday. The southernmost district, Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod in the northern tip, witnessed widespread uprooting of trees, water-logging and disruption of power supply since last night.
The Central Water Commission (CWC) issued flood warning to the state in the wake of rising water level in rivers like Manimala and Achankovil.
As the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded red alert , indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall above 204 mm in 24 hours, in 9 districts, the entire state was put on high vigil. ....

Due to the deep depression formed over Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea that intensified into a cyclonic storm Tauktae over the archipelago and adjoining southeast east-central Arabian Sea moving northwards, has caused huge damage to the coastal areas in Kerala.
