BOKARO: A massive fire broke out in the Blast Furnace-2 of the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) on Friday. The fire erupted after a torpedo ladle carrying hot metal was punctured. Hot metal of 1300°C temperature leaked out of the torpedo and a fire started at the spot. The flames rose so high that they engulfed the entire torpedo. BSL is a unit of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).
About half a dozen fire tenders took about two hours to douse the flames. Senior officials of the BSL plant reached the spot. Fortunately, no casualty has been reported. The incident took place when the loco was ferrying a hot metal-laden torpedo to the Steel Melting Shop (SMS).
Bokaro: Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Rai has raised concerns over the condition of pollution in Damodar river, accusing Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) of callously discharging its effluents into the waterbody posing health hazards to local population dependent on the river, considered as one of the lifelines in this part of the state. On Monday, he met with Union minister of steel RCP Singh in Delhi to draw his attention and demand action against BSL.
Rai, who is the president of Damodar Bachao Andolan, also showed photographs of the current condition of river to the minister. The pictures depicted how the colour of the water has turned red. He also showed pictures of the discharge of effluents through BSL’s canal flowing into the river.
