Anniversary of George Floyd's death commemorated at Des Moines rally


More than 100 people gathered at the Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines on Tuesday to commemorate the anniversary of George Floyd s death.
The event was organized by the No Justice, No Peace PAC, the New Frontier Fund, the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa and others. It comes one year after Floyd, a Black Minneapolis man, was murdered by Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, who kneeled on Floyd s neck for nearly nine minutes on May 25, 2020.
Speakers at the event said in gathering to remember Floyd s death, that they hope to make sure he didn t die in vain. West Des Moines city councilwoman Renee Hardman, the first Black woman to sit on the council, asked those in attendance to continue the struggle that began with months of protests against systematic racism last summer. ....

ðŸ'Ÿ Kansas Track & Field Concludes Regular Season with Ward Haylett Invitational – Kansas Jayhawks


LAWRENCE, Kan. –  The Kansas men’s  and women’s track and field teams close out the regular season portion of their 2021 outdoor campaign this weekend when they travel to the Ward Haylett Invitational in Manhattan, Kansas May 6-8.
The Jayhawks are expected to send a contingent of entries throughout the three-day meet, which starts on Thursday evening with several field events beginning at 4 p.m. The meet continues into Friday beginning at 5 p.m. and Saturday beginning at 10 a.m
The Ward Haylett Invitational marks Kansas’ 10
th meet of the outdoor season, before competing in the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in Manhattan May 14-16. The Jayhawks will then send qualifying entries to the NCAA West Preliminary in College Station, Texas May 27-29 and the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon June 9-12. ....

3-Time Tony-Nominated Playwright Arthur Kopit Dies at 83


Born Arthur Lee Koenig in Manhattan May 10, 1937, Mr. Kopit would eventually take his stepfather s surname. While studying engineering at Harvard University, Kopit began trying his hand at playwrighting, ultimately making his professional debut with
Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma s Hung You in the Closet and I m Feelin So Sad. After the piece won a Harvard playwriting contest, it enjoyed a hit 1962 Off-Broadway run in a production helmed by Jerome Robbins that would also play a six-week Broadway engagement the following year.
