Rape Crisis Centre protests for court upgrade

The Rape Crisis Centre in Cape Town held a protest outside the Western Cape regional office of the justice department.
CAPE TOWN - The Rape Crisis Centre in Cape Town says sexual assault victims often bump into their perpetrators along court corridors.
It says this leads to some withdrawing cases.
It submitted a memorandum of grievances to the Western Cape Justice Department to respond to by the end of the month.
Mandisa Mbotshelwa from the Rape Crisis Centre said: “We believe that when survivors are testifying in court they need to feel safe and comfortable in order for them to survive. ....

Cape Town - Close to 100 people gathered outside the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development’s Western Cape regional offices in the Cape Town CBD today to protest for justice for rape survivors and appropriate access to justice.
Rape Crisis, the Rape Survivors’ Justice Campaign (RSJC), community-based organisations and Khayelitsha residents took part in the #JusticeProtest, demanding that the Khayelitsha Sexual Offences Court (SOC) be properly upgraded for survivors of rape and sexual assault.
Similar protests calling for upgrades by Rape Crisis have been held for the past six years outside the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court. ....

Rape Crisis says Justice Department upgrading Khayelitsha sexual offences court not enough

Rape Crisis and supporters protested in Cape Town on Monday.
They want the Justice Department to fulfil its promise to make services at the sexual offences court in Khayelitsha safer and more accessible to all survivors.
The department says it has made upgrades that are in line with the Regulations for Sexual Offences Courts.
But Rape Crisis believes the recently completed upgrades fall short of what the department had promised to do.
Activists and supporters of Rape Crisis s Rape Survivors Justice Campaign (RSJC) protested outside the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development in Cape Town on Monday, GroundUp reports.
The group say there are still services not being fulfilled at the sexual offences court in the Khayelitsha Magistrate s Court, despite recent upgrades to the building. ....
