Morgan, a 23-year-old migrant worker from St. Vincent, was on his way to spend the summer at Welsh Bros., a small family-run farm in Scotland for his fourth summer.

A spokesperson for the Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) program said that it is still “gathering information” on the circumstances of Morgan’s death, including the cause of it.
“The untimely death of Mr. Morgan is a tragedy,” said an email statement. “ESDC extends its sincere condolences to Mr. Morgan’s family for their tragic loss. ....

Large farm operations in COVID-19 hot spot regions are working to vaccinate as many migrant workers as possible as another growing season gets underway.
Fruit and vegetable growers rely on foreign workers who must be tested before boarding a plane and then again upon arrival.
That has to be negative as well for everything to continue as normal, which is stay in a quarantine location for 14 days, and like any other Canadian citizen that s arriving, they must also have a day-10 negative test as well, explained Goldsmith Orchards Kyle Oakley.

Budget 2021 comes up short for Canada’s fruit and vegetable growers
On behalf of Canada’s fruit and vegetable growers, the Canadian Horticultural Council (CHC) applauds the federal government’s commitment to COVID recovery and maintaining environmental goals for our country. However, we are disappointed at the allocation of funding for agriculture in Monday’s Budget 2021 announcement, as it fails to adequately recognize our sector’s important role in a post-pandemic economic recovery.

Federal budget reveals plans for migrant worker support, carbon backstop and COVID recovery

The federal government revealed its 2021 budget yesterday, the first in two years.
Plans address ongoing programs to manage COVID-19, working towards economic recovery and plans for growth. In addition to a proposed federal minimum wage of $15 per hour, several areas impact the Canadian horticultural sector in particular.
Changes to mandatory isolation support
Budget 2021 proposes to provide $57.6 million in 2021-22 to extend the Mandatory Isolation Support for Temporary Foreign Workers Program up until June 15, then reducing the amount provided and phasing out the program in August.
