Death of a mailboy
A plaque on the old Clifden Bridge commemorates the death by drowning of Joseph Garthwaite. a mailboy aged 17, on May 26 1865.
He was drowned while carrying the mail between Riverton and Te Anau on what was then a rough track through the scrub.
Although the plaque says that he was swept into a cave, still known as Mailboy’s Cave, the newspaper report differs.
‘’ Mr Joseph Garthwaite, son of Mr William Garthwaite, was drowned in a lagoon on Mr Cuthbertson s run, on Friday last. The deceased, a promising lad, seventeen years of age, was employed in carrying the mail between the Te Anau and Riverton, and it is conjectured that in crossing on horseback the lagoon which was much flooded, he had got out of his depth. The body was recovered. ....

Southland well-placed to capitalise on growing global green hydrogen market

But for Canny, the shock lasted just moments. His mind quickly switched to potential opportunities, in particular green hydrogen.
Canny had circled green hydrogen as a possible industry for Southland from as far back as 2008.
Venture Southland - now called Great South - was a foundation member of the New Zealand Hydrogen Association, with Canny leading the way.
Invercargill-based transport company, HWR Richardson Group, was another foundation member.
Green hydrogen is a fuel produced by the electrolysis of water using renewable electricity. The appeal is its potential to help reduce carbon emissions. ....

A $700 million facility is to be built at Makarewa, near Invercargill.
Huge amounts of digital data is produced by people scrolling social media and streaming from the likes of Netflix and TVNZ OnDemand.
Some of it could end up being stored in Southland in the country s first hyperscale data centre.
“We do believe that Invercargill is the perfect location for data centres,” says Remi Galasso, one of the men behind Datagrid.
“The whole world needs to find sources of green energy to store the data.” ....
