Religious Oppression on the March Worldwide

Human rights are under siege in many nations. Three of the world’s most important countries, China, Russia, and India, are moving backward on political freedom, though the last at least still holds free elections. All three also are increasingly violating religious liberty. And they are not alone. The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom recently released its latest report, which concluded that religious repression is rampant.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the problem. Religious minorities remain convenient scapegoats, which was sadly evident in 2020. USCIRF observed that its “monitoring revealed that in some countries, already marginalized religious minorities faced official and/or societal stigmatization, harassment, and discrimination for allegedly causing or spreading the virus.” Moreover, those imprisoned for their religious beliefs were vulnerable to increased health risks due to the disease’s spread in overcrowded prisons. ....

WH Shuns Push for 'Diplomatic Boycott' of Beijing Olympics

The White House is standing by its decision not to pursue a diplomatic boycott of next year’s winter Olympics in Beijing despite new pressure from a human rights group and key senators urging all U.S. officials to skip the games. Doing so, these advocates say, would send a message to the world that the persecution of China’s Uyghur Muslim population will not be ignored.
A National Security Council spokesman told RealClearPolitics on Friday that the U.S. still has no plans to discuss a diplomatic boycott with allies and partners. Ned Price, a State Department spokesman, had signaled an interest earlier this month in pursuing such a step, which would allow U.S. athletes to participate in the games but bar U.S. lawmakers and other government officials from traveling there, but he quickly walked it back just days later. ....

Redesignate China Country of Particular Concern For Abusing Religious Freedoms: USCIRF Report

Reuters
The U.S. government should redesignate China as a “country of particular concern” (CPC) for violating the right to worship freely in its Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) and elsewhere, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) said in an annual report Wednesday.
China was among 14 countries that USCIRF, a bipartisan and independent federal government body, recommended to the U.S. State Department in its 2021 Annual Report for designation as CPCs because their governments engage in or tolerate “systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations.” Of the 14, China was among 10 that the State Department designated as CPCs in December 2020. ....
