Belmond's pool to open June 4


   Belmond’s Luick Memorial Swimming Pool will open a week later than usual this year. Opening day is planned for Friday, June 4.
  City Manager Darrel Steven Carlyle told the city council Monday night, “Because of new rules during Covid-19, all our lifeguards have to be recertified. We are having to bring someone here in early June to take care of that this year.”
  The council approved the hiring of 13 returning lifeguards, seven new lifeguards, and five front desk workers. Pay will range from $7.00 to $8.70 per hour depending upon years of experience, training, and leadership responsibilities.
  When the pool does open, the water should be nice and warm. A different heater is currently being installed. “This heater is a lot bigger than the old one,” said Public Works Director Justin Fournier. “It will require a new, larger gas line and meter. Water and sewer rates going up in July


   Monthly water and sewer bills in Belmond will be going up July 1, but not as high as previously thought.
  Late last year, an outside consultant recommended to the city council that water rates be increased by 16% each year for the next five years. It also recommended that sewer rates be increased 5% for the next two years.
  City Manager Darrel Steven Carlyle told the city council Monday night that much of the blame for the price hikes can be placed on the closure of the Eaton factory in Belmond. Eaton was a large user of water and sewer, and the loss of that revenue was expected to create lots of red ink in those accounts. ....
