California may make it easier for parents to request that their children be held back a grade level next school year or have letter grades earned this school year changed to a “pass” or “don’t pass” score, which some colleges will be required to accept if Assembly Bill 104 becomes law.
The bill was introduced today by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, as a way to ensure that students aren’t punished for falling behind academically during the pandemic.
“The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated educational inequities in California’s school system at an unprecedented scale,” said Gonzalez in her author’s statement. “Mounting evidence indicates that our most vulnerable students lack the necessary academic, social emotional, and technological supports needed to be successful in distance learning, leaving them to fall behind and underperform.” ....

Advocates hope for better data, requirements on colleges and race

For years, researchers and higher education advocates have been frustrated by the lack of good Education Department data on how students of color and those with lower incomes are being let down by the nation’s higher education system.
“It’s hard to solve racial equity problems if you can’t see them,” said Clare McCann, deputy director for federal higher education policy at the progressive think tank New America, and formerly a senior policy adviser at the department during the Obama administration.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 13, 2021 /PRNewswire/ ECMC Foundation announced today the launch of the Catalyzing Transfer Initiative (CTI), a national shared learning and collaboration effort between high-impact non-profit organizations that aims to build, manage, and activate new ways to increase successful transfer of postsecondary credits and timely bachelor degree completion among marginalized racial and ethnic groups.
