Tursunjan Mamat, a practicing Muslim in western China’s Xinjiang region, said he’s fasting for Ramadan but his daughters, ages 8 and 10, are not. Religious activity including fasting is not permitted for minors, he explained.
The 32-year-old ethnic Uyghur wasn’t complaining, at least not to a group of foreign journalists brought to his home outside the city of Aksu by government officials, who listened in on his responses. It seemed he was giving a matter-of-fact description of how religion is practiced under rules set by China’s Communist Party.
“My children know who our holy creator is, but I don’t give them detailed religious knowledge,” he said, speaking through a translator. “After they reach 18, they can receive religious education according to their own will.” ....

Islam declining in China's Xinjiang region amid govt controls

By Javier García
Kashgar/Urumqi, China, May 7 (EFE).- A muezzin calls for prayer during Ramadan from Kashgar’s Id Kah mosque, the largest in China, without using a loudspeaker, unlike other Muslim places, while about 50 devotees gather to pray, a small number for a city of more than 700,000 people.
The mosque, built in the 15th century and surrounded by gardens, can accommodate up to 20,000 people and is a symbol of Kashgar, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the legendary capital of southern Xinjiang, predominantly populated by the Uyghur ethnic minority.
The mosque’s imam, Juma Tahir, was stabbed to death by four Islamic extremists on July 30, 2014, outside the compound a few minutes after morning prayer, meeting the same fate as other imams, especially in southern Xinjiang. ....

Ramadan Barely Present in Uyghur Region After Years of Repression

6 May 2021
Uyghur Muslims in China’s western territory of Xinjiang have largely refrained from participating in traditional religious rituals associated with the Islamic holiday of Ramadan such as dawn-to-dusk fasting and increased prayer over the past month due to the Chinese government’s crackdown on Islam in the region.
Associated Press (AP) reporters traveled to Xinjiang in late April as part of a foreign press trip organized by the Chinese government to document current conditions in the territory. The trip coincided with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which lasts from April 12 to May 12 this year. Islam requires Muslims to pray five times a day and encourages its adherents to attend special nightly prayers during Ramadan. AP reporters who visited the city of Kashgar during the April trip said Thursday they saw so few people in attendance at mosques in the city of Kashgar during regular prayer times in the middle of Ramadan that they concluded “Islam is o ....
