Conventional method involves unhygienic practice, says Angara
Minister for Ports, Fisheries and Inland Water Transport S. Angara said on Saturday that the Fisheries Department will promote the use of solar fish dryers in the coastal belt.
Speaking to media persons in Udupi, the Minister said that under the conventional method, fish is being sun-dried in open yards in an unhygienic manner. When fish is dried in solar dryers, nutrients can be retained and hygiene can be maintained. The matter would be discussed further in the department and later, a proposal will be sent to the government to promote it in the coastal belt. ....

UDUPI: The body of a fisherman who accidentally slipped and fell into the Arabian Sea while on a fishing expedition with others was recovered some 10 nautical miles off Malpe fisheries harbour on January 15.
Police identified the victim as Sudhakar Venkanna Hoskatti, 39, resident of Hoskatta near Gokarna in Uttara Kannada district. The incident happened on board the fishing boat Sri Trijala (KA02MM3830) on January 13, police said.
The boat had left the harbour on January 10 with Umesh, Rama, Sharath, Choodamani and Sudhakar. Nagaraj Thukaram Bobbukar, owner of the fishing vessel in his complaint to Malpe police said Venkanna slipped and fell into the Sea while he was drawing in the fishing net around 1am, some 13 nautical miles from the coast. Efforts by others to spot and rescue him in the darkness went in vain. A case has been registered in Malpe PS. ....
