From the mailbag: A 'Greater Idaho' means a poorer Malheur County | Opinion


The push to move Oregon’s border to a “Greater Idaho” should worry Malheur residents. The organizers of the movement are touting the financial, political, and moral benefits of moving the border. Maybe this is true, but it seems that most of those benefits will extend exclusively to wealthy upper class citizens, a group that doesn’t need any more help, while middle and lower class residents will suffer.
Idaho’s labor laws should be enough to convince Malheur residents to reject moving the border. With the next increase starting July 1 of this year, minimum wage in the county will be nearly $5 more per hour than in Idaho. Moving the border will rob minimum-wage workers of nearly $800 per month before taxes. Moreover, opponents of raising the minimum wage have always pointed out that when minimum wage is increased, it increases everyone else’s wages. Border move would split Jefferson County and Redmond and Bend would be in different states
As voters demanded, Jefferson County commissioners has spent the past few weeks exploring the possibility leaving Oregon and joining Idaho.
It s part of the Greater Idaho initative that would shift state lines to move most of Oregon counties east of the Cascades into Idaho. Commissioners discussed the plan in August and again in mid-February.
Jefferson County voters decided in November to require commissioners to discuss the issue twice a year.
There s a million questions, for sure, says Kelly Simmelink, County Commission chair.
Chris Taylor of the Move Oregon s Border campaign argued why it s worthwhile to tackle those million questions. Unfortunately, the boundary between Oregon and Idaho is really outdated because it doesn t match the cultural boundary between people who like Portland and Salem s leadership and people who don t. ....
