On February 25, 1964, 22-year-old Cassius Clay (soon to become Muhammad Ali) beat Sonny Liston in a highly anticipated boxing match on Miami Beach. At the time, hotels in the city were off-limits to Black patrons, so the men headed to the Hampton House Motel and Villas in Miami s Brownsville neighborhood across the bay, where they gathered in a room to celebrate Clay’s new status as heavyweight champion of the world. No one knows what was discussed in that room, but One Night in Miami fictionalizes what may have transpired that night.
