Kuala Lumpur: The Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry (MPIC) is highly encouraged by the improved overall performance of the country’s commodities industry last year, deputy minister Datuk Willie Mongin 
(pic) said.
“This positive sign has given the ministry encouragement and further motivation to work more actively in stimulating activities at both the upstream and downstream levels,” he said during RTM’s Bicara Naratif programme titled “State of Emergency: The Commodities Sector Keeps on Producing for the Country’s Economy” aired Wednesday night.
It was reported that the country’s agricommodity sector recorded a trade value of RM191.7 billion last year, up 14 per cent from RM168.1 billion in 2019. ....

Farmer's daughter makes name for herself as entrepreneur


KUCHING – As a child, she and her siblings would toil under the hot sun tending their parents’ black pepper plants.
Today, Awaeang Kwasin, 44, has made it big as an entrepreneur dealing in black pepper through her company Syarikat Nang Ori. Besides owning and operating two pepper processing factories, she also exports the commodity and has ventured into producing downstream products as well.

This mother-of-five, whose father used to cultivate black pepper in Kampung Bratan – about 24 kilometres from here – said her interest in business began during her childhood when she used to assist her mother to sell vegetables from house-to-house and also at the Satok weekend market. ....

KULAI: The Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (KPPK) is making efforts to boost the country’s pepper production following a rise in demand at both local and international levels.
Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali (
pix) said that although pepper production is currently led by Sarawak, the crop cultivation could be further expanded in Johor, before moving to other states.
As such, he has instructed the Malaysian Pepper Board (MPB) to set a target to restore Johor’s former glory as the centre of pepper cultivation in Malaysia
“It is possible to further expand production in Johor because if we look at Vietnam, pepper is being cultivated on a large-scale and the country is the world’s leading producer,“ he said after visiting a pepper farm pilot project involving a 2.3- hectare area in Felda Inas Utara here. ....

KULAI: The foreign worker hiring freeze for the plantations and commodities sector will only be lifted after Malaysia successfully controls the Covid-19 pandemic, says Datuk Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali.
The Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister said that among the factors that would be taken into consideration are the ability of companies in providing lodging that will adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) on Covid-19.
He said the government’s present policy in freezing the intake of foreign workers was also due to giving the priority to Malaysians first in the workforce.
“We are in the midst of mobilising a campaign so that plantations such as oil palm and rubber can carry out strict SOP to ensure there will be no outbreak in the respective sectors. ....

KUCHING: Malaysia’s pepper prices are likely to continue their uptrend in 2021 after staging a relief rally this year as global production output took a nosedive.
Domestic white and black pepper prices have gone up by 25% in the past 12 months due to production shortfalls by key producing countries, according to Sarawak’s leading pepper exporter Nguong Aik (Kuching) Sdn Bhd director William S.C. Yii.
He said the strong price recovery was not unexpected as pepper producing countries have reported reduction in new crop harvests by between 15% and 35% this year compared with 2019. ....
