what was some of the most surprising things that you learned as you kind of uncovered these truths that were unknown? i think, you know, there is a lot of different areas that about about the civil war and how that folds into the larger teaching of american history that people misunderstand. so one thing that was surprising was to learn how definitive the confederacy was about why they succeeded and essentially, this makes clear what the civil war was all about. in all these successionist documents, they were explicitly clear saying we are doing this because of slavery. so just seeing that and then seeing the tremendous pr campaign the sons and daughters of confederacy put forward, i thought a lot of these monuments that are plastered across the country to the confederacy. i thought they went up at that time. but what we learned during that during making uncivil, based on the work of historians, i should say, who were doing that work was that this was
history books. it s not well known. why do you think that is? absolutely. i mean, i i first of all, thank you so much for having us on and thank you for checking out the podcast. i m really excited about what you all have coming up with this documentary. um, the history i grew up of the civil war sort of didn t really imagine black people as agents, as part of the process of emancipation, right? you almost got the idea in some of the accounts that we were just sitting around on plantations waiting for the union army to come. so that s one of the key thing that we wanted to highlight in uncivil was to really highlight the role people had played, all kinds of folks. certainly, the union army played an important role. but here, harriet tubman not only participated in that raid but she planned it and led it and that was and the ways in which she was key to the strategy was something that we learned during the process of making uncivil. and we have lessons like that throughout t
why. the award-winning uncivil tells many fascinating and unknown stories of the war, including one of an incredible raid in south carolina. it was an act of bravery carried out mainly by slaves that saved hundreds of others like them. take a listen. the boats headed back down the river. at the last bend, enraged confederates appeared with canons but montgomery s troops fired first and slipped past with just enough time to chug out of range. on board were more than 700 newly-freed people. just to put that in context, if you look at tubman s work on the underground railroad, most conservative estimates say she helped free roughly 75 people over the course of ten years. but in the cumby raid, more than 700 in a single trip. the success of the raid was front-page news in 1863, north and south. heading up a river, daringly
against it. just because i do not want critical-race theory taught to my children in school does not mean that i am a racist. how about you fire them? sir. by limiting the number of population in the count, they specifically limited the number of representatives that would be available in the slave-holding states and they did it for the purpose of ending slavery. well before abraham lincoln, well before civil war, do we talk about that? i don t hear that anywhere. when i see some of that stuff, i i am i m shocked. i m not surprised. but but i m shocked by it. what s your reaction? well, i mean, i think that, you know, what these people and, you know, many some of the other conservative leaders who continue to sort of stoke outrage. what they are terrified about is that people are excited about learning real history. one of the great benefits of making a podcast like uncivil
