August Wilson Monologue Competition Makes Its Louisiana Debut

For more than a decade, ​high school students around the country have honored the life and work of the late playwright August Wilson with an annual monologue competition, delivering scenes from “Fences” and “The Piano Lesson.”
The first round of competition is held regionally and in a typical year winners advance to a
national final in New York City. Louisiana hasn’t held a local competition in the past, but that changed Saturday when L.B. Landry High School in Algiers hosted the state’s inaugural event.
Twenty-one students from eight New Orleans schools participated including Landry senior Laila Joseph. She said while her teachers had mentioned Wilson in passing, she was largely unfamiliar with his work before signing up for the competition. ....

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Downtown New Orleans’ first and largest signature mural collection expands with the addition of “You Are What You Eat” by New Orleans native and artist, Jessica Strahan. Strahan’s work is the seventh mural featured in
Unframed presented by The Helis Foundation, a project of the Arts Council New Orleans. Strahan was the first muralist to be announced from the
Unframed 2.0 international call to women artists, which resulted in 82 submissions. “You Are What You Eat” is located in
Legacy Park at 730 Baronne St.
“Jessica celebrates New Orleans’ distinctive culture in her artwork,” says The Helis Foundation Managing Director Jessie Schott Haynes. “She not only captures the city’s rich community, but she engaged with local students to create this impressive and vibrant mural.” ....

.- The Studio Museum in Harlem’s annual Artist-in-Residence exhibition is on view at MoMA PS1, moving this presentation outside the Studio Museum’s walls for the second time as part of a multiyear partnership with the Museum of Modern Art and PS1. This Longing Vessel features new work by the 2019–20 cohort of the Studio Museum’s signature residency program—artists E. Jane (b. 1990, Bethesda, MD), Naudline Pierre (b. 1989, Leominster, MA), and Elliot Reed (b. 1992, Milwaukee, WI)—whose artistic practices span new media, performance, and painting.
