When long-serving SA National Defence Force (SANDF) Chief General Solly Shoke retires at the end of May, current Joint Operations Chief, Lieutenant General Rudzani Maphwanya, will move into the office suite reserved for South Africa’s top soldier as the only general – and the most senior officer – in the force. His appointment, along with that of other service and division chiefs, was announced on Wednesday evening by President Cyril Ramaphosa – Commander-in-Chief of the national defence force. Welcoming Maphwanya, the President said in a broadcast statement that he is “a highly decorated officer with vast operational experience” whose military career started in 1978 in the then armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC) – Umkhonto we Sizwe.

Fellow South Africans, I address you this evening as the Commander-in-Chief of the South African National Defence Force on new appointments to the leadership of our armed forces. By virtue of the powers vested in me by our Constitution and legislation, it is my responsibility to appoint the Chief of the South African National Defence Force and the Military Command. The Military Command is constituted by the Chiefs of the Services and Divisions of the South African National Defence.

Thursday 15 April 2021 - 10:58am Major-General Thalita Mxakato Facebook Major-General Thalita Mxakato will assume the position of Chief of Defence Intelligence on 1 June. Ramaphosa said:  I am also pleased to announce the appointment of Major-General Thalita Mxakato as Chief of Defence Intelligence as of 1 June 2021. The Defence Intelligence Division provides combat-ready intelligence and counter-intelligence capabilities for employment in operations or joint and multinational force preparations. Major-General Mxakato joined Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1983. She completed her basic training in Angola and specialisation training in the German Democratic Republic. She has served in the SANDF since its formation in 1994. Before joining the Defence Intelligence Division in 2003, she served in the South African Military Health Services and the Defence Inspectorate Division.
