Trucks stuck at Namanga as row over maize exports unresolved

Kenyan authorities remain tight-lipped a month after banning Tanzanian and Ugandan maize imports into the country.
This past week, sources at the Namanga border crossing say Tanzania has blocked all transit trucks from entering the country from the Kenyan side.
A spot check at the crossing on Wednesday found stranded maize trucks on the Tanzanian side, while more than 20 trucks on the Kenyan side had not been cleared to cross into Tanzania. ....

Maize ban should help us rethink agricultural extension services

On March 5, the Kenyan Government issued a ban on the importation of maize from Uganda. The decision, according to the head of Kenyan Agriculture and Food Authority, stemmed from their findings on the safety of food imports to Kenya that revealed maize from Uganda and Tanzania contains substances that cause cancer. This decision has attracted an unprecedented response from some Ugandan legislators, who proposed a ban on agricultural imports from Kenya in retaliation. Whereas the need to protect Ugandan traders involved in maize export is understandable, our legislators should become more proactive to deal with the root cause of the problem and save us from future troubles.   ....

Summary
Kenya has denied banning maize imports from Uganda and Tanzania over aflatoxin as the East African Community termed the decision not procedural.
The Agriculture and Food Authority in a letter dated March 5 said maize from the two countries have revealed high levels of mycotoxins “that are consistently beyond safety limits of 10 parts be billion” sparking off a fresh trade war between the three founding EAC partner states.
But while Kenya’s ministries of the East African Community and Trade remained tight-lipped, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya appeared to contradict the AFA letter when he denied banning maize imports. ....

Kenya has set the stage for a war with its main trading partners after it banned importation of maize from Uganda and Tanzania.
The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) said on Friday that surveillance and tests they had done on maize from the two countries had shown that most of it was infected with aflatoxin.
However, East African Community (EAC) Director-General for Customs and Trade ‎Kenneth Bagamuhunda described Nairobi’s move as “unilateral.” ....
