Strong winds warning issued
Environment Canada and Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting have issued special weather statements of gusty winds coming to the region.
Winds of 50-70 km/h are expected for overnight and into Wednesday morning for the region.
“A low pressure system will move across the B.C. Interior tonight and into Alberta Wednesday morning that will bring strong west to southwesterly winds over the southern interior overnight and Wednesday morning. The winds will ease Wednesday afternoon,” Mainroad reported this evening (Jan. 12).
“Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions due to high winds. ....

Mainroad forecasting varying snowfall levels for Purcells
Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd.’s meteorological service is predicting a weather system will move into the region for tonight into Wednesday evening before tapering around dawn on Thursday.
Light to moderate snow showers are expected for the Panorama Mountain Resort area with accumulations of 15-30cm possible.
Elsewhere, light snow showers will develop for the overnight hours into Tuesday morning before temperatures rise above freezing for Tuesday afternoon through to Wednesday afternoon.
Possible snow accumulations of two to five cm from Moyie north to Canal Flats, three to seven cm for Kimberley and Irishman-Yahk south to the border by Tuesday afternoon. ....

There is an area on the south end of Elkford at what is called the “S Curves” that is unsafe and has been an ongoing problem for a couple of years now.
There is a low spot on the shoulder next to the highway on the north heading side, just past the gravel road access. It initially was noticed at the beginning of last winter after numerous cars went into the ditch in that area after the first snowfall and has gotten progressively worse.
When you come around the corner, especially in winter, it is not noticeable where the pavement ends when it is snow covered. When a driver hits that section, it pulls you towards the ditch. The first instinct is to correct which then sends that vehicle across the oncoming traffic lane. If you can’t correct in time, you go down the hill into the ditch. ....

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd. is this evening forecasting possible hazardous weather conditions in the Elk Valley, with snow of varying levels elsewhere in the region tonight and tomorrow.
Mainroad’s meteorological service is predicting variable precipitation over the next 48 hours that includes rain, snow, gusty winds, and road surface temperatures hovering around freezing within the entire East Kootenay. The mixed precipitation is expected to affect the service area from Friday evening into Sunday evening.
Mixed precipitation from the system will start this evening with strong winds of up to 80km/h lasting throughout the weekend in the Elk Valley. Peak gusts of 90-100km/h are possible. Mostly dry conditions are expected for the remainder of Saturday before the evening where another six to 10 cm of snowfall to the region into Sunday. ....
