FUKUOKA A special Nagareboshi Shinkansen, or shooting star bullet train, ran in the southwestern Japan region of Kyushu with a spectacular display of light on the night of March 14 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Kyushu Shinkansen Line s full-scale opening.
The bullet train, casting beams of light from windows in seven colors with special lighting equipment, ran from Kagoshima-Chuo Station in the city of Kagoshima to Hakata Station in the city of Fukuoka. An event to view the shinkansen was held in a multipurpose square near Chikugo-Funagoya Station in the Fukuoka Prefecture town of Chikugo, and some 2,100 people enjoyed the view. ....

FUKUOKA A team of high school students in this west Japan city has developed a bicycle that runs on a compressed air engine which has been officially certified by Guinness World Records as the fastest compressed air powered bicycle on the planet.
The group that came up with the bike consists of eight third-year students majoring in automotive engineering at Fukuoka Municipal Hakata Technical High School. Using the specially adapted engine, the bike reached a speed of 63.966 kilometers per hour in November 2020. ....

MIKASA, Hokkaido A fossilized ammonite discovered in the town of Haboro in Japan s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido has been identified as a new species, it has been reported.
Mikasa City Museum in the same prefecture announced the discovery in a journal published on Jan. 1 by the Palaeontological Society of Japan.
The fossil was found in a stratum from the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era (about 86.3 million years to 89.8 million years ago). Ammonites were an ancient relative of squid and octopi that had spiral shells. Throughout Japan s 47 prefectures, the highest number of ammonite fossils have been found in Hokkaido. TOKYO The number of temporary teachers in Japan at public elementary and junior high schools has reached 7.5% of the total, according to the results of a survey by the education ministry.
According to a Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology survey, there are 43,900 temporary teachers in Japan at such schools this academic year (excluding substitutes for teachers on maternity and child care leave), a 24% increase from the 35,374 in the 2008 academic year the earliest year for which data could be confirmed by the Mainichi Shimbun. The ministry also says that the number of teachers stipulated by law to maintain an adequate level of education is 583,488 this academic year. Of these, ....
